Default firmware keymap == Dvorak?! Primary Keymap changing without flashing

Any help fixing this or isolating the issue to the user, firmware, keyboard, or PC would be appreciated.

Keyboardio 1.94.0-beta
Arduino 1.8.8 (I believe I installed several drivers e.g. USB during installation. That may have not been the right thing to do.)


I’ve been trying the following keymaps:

  • Workman
  • Dvorak (default)
  • Dvorak (modified)

For Workman and Dvorak (modified), I added

  1. a corresponding
    #elif defined (PRIMARY_KEYMAP_WORKMAN) and
    #elif defined (PRIMARY_KEYMAP_DVORAKMOD)
    keymap to the KEYMAPS() section

  2. an additional
    #define PRIMARY_KEYMAP_WORKMAN and
    #define PRIMARY_KEYMAP_DVORAKMOD
    (I made very sure to keep all but one commented out, at a time.)

As I made changes to the DVORAK, all was fine. The last thing I remember was that I moved the LED key to the function layer, verified that it worked, packed up the Keyboardio and came home. When I powered it up, this evening, the keymap was… changed. I am a novice at Dvorak (USA), but I know there shouldn’t be vowels coming from the right side of the keyboard (let’s call this new layout ‘MUTANT’). So

  • I re-flash my firmware and keymap stays MUTANT
  • I flash the ‘example’ firmware and I get DVORAK instead of QWERTY (this happened, twice)
  • About 10 minutes later, the layout spontaneously changed to MUTANT
  • And then, a few minutes later, it spontaneously changed to QWERTY

(By ‘spontaneous’ I mean ‘without me flashing it or powercycling the keyboard.’)

  • I then flashed using the example: QWERTY
  • I then modified the example to DVORAK: DVORAK
  • I then flashed using my DVORAKMOD layout: I got my DVORAKMOD

Are there any suggestions to troubleshoot this? This can’t be normal (can it?). Thanks.

Interesting: with the LEDs set to display the letter I just pressed, the letter is still correct.

Wow: now it’s back to normal. Lasted about 10 minutes.

Note: in troubleshooting this, I changed the name of my layout from DVORAKMOD to HEATH

I don’t see anything obviously wrong with your sketch. Does the issue occur when you change layers, or is it apparently random?

The only thing I can think to check would be the EEPROM plugins. I’m really unfamiliar with them, but I wonder if there’s a different keymap stored in memory and the plugin is pulling that out for some reason. If you aren’t actually using them, I’d try removing Focus, EEPROMSettings, and EEPROMKeymap.

Thank you very much for looking at it. If I had to guess, I’d say it was not random. But I couldn’t say what it is, yet. Hasn’t happened since I posted about it, this morning.

unclick ‘emulate.’ The browser’s simulator keyboard displays MUTANT, but the actual key is CORRECT.

I think this is solved: user error.

There is a Windows 10 hotkey combination (WIN + SPC) that cycles through enabled keyboard layouts. If I have the PC in the default layout (QWERTY), my custom layout on the M01 works, fine. However: if the PC keyboard layout is changed to DVORAK , I get the MUTANT layout.

Why am I pressing the WIN key, you ask? Well, I’m not actually pressing the key I have mapped to ‘WIN’: I have CTRL, ESC, and SPC all mapped to different thumb keys; every so often, I am mashing “CTRL + ESC + SPC”. “CTRL + ESC” == WIN (another Windows hotkey combination), so “CTRL + ESC + SPC” == “WIN + SPC” was changing the PC keyboard layout and causing me to see MUTANT. My troubleshooting always included cycling through the PC’s keyboard layouts, but I didn’t make the connection until now. The problem was never with the M01. Sorry. Hopefully, this helps someone else.

maybe add the need for the PC keyboard layout to be ‘qwerty/default’ (or maybe it’s for the PC to stay in whatever layout it was in when it the M01 was programmed?) for the M01 layout to work? Maybe just for Windows?

I’ll check if having the PC in DVORAK is what was causing the default layout to be DVORAK, when I have time. My guess is yes…

Whatever the relationship between the M01 layout and the PC layout is, it should be understood and documented. If it is and I missed it, please let me know. Thanks to all.

My understanding is that this problem isn’t unique to the M01, and that other Dvorak keyboards exhibit the same behavior. It’s why, even though I exclusively use Colemak, I still keep my M01 on QWERTY mode.

I’m … actually not entirely sure why this is. If you have an AZERTY or QWERTZ keyboard, selecting that in the OS doesn’t screw things up. Thinking about it, I suspect they send the same scancodes as QWERTY boards, and they just have different legends printed on the keycaps. It’s either that, or the OS treats them differently.

You type COLEMAK but your M01 is “on QWERTY mode”? How? Can I type DVORAK but have my M01 “on QWERTY mode”? Maybe that would prevent this? Can you please explain? Thanks.
