Repositioning Thumb Keys

Hello J + K,

On KS, Update #45, Day 691 Crawling toward PVT. Subsection Keycap Engraving is a beautiful unfinished left Model 01. I’m wondering if the thumb keys are inter-changeable? As shown in the photo the keys are ctrl, bksp, cmd, and shift; with a raised dot on the bksp for reference.

Even if thumb keys are technically changeable, are they unique in their original placement? As in how they’re molded - they’re suppose to fit where they are…

Other than the little bumps on space/backspace, all of the thumb keys are identically shaped.

(They have different id numbers molded inside, but that doesn’t change their fit.)

Best,
Jesse

what is the process to lift and replace keycaps? I don’t want to break anything.

Often, you can just pull them up from the sides with your fingers.

If you’re having trouble doing that, you can either get a commercially made key puller (we recommend the wire style, not the plastic kind) or remove the enclosure to get easier access to the edges.

A wire keypuller looks something like https://www.amazon.com/WASD-Keyboards-Wire-Keycap-Puller/dp/B00AZCGF7K

I haven’t wanted to try.

Thanks!
