Atreus vs Voyager

Hi!

I currently own an Ergodox and a Model100, where the Model100 is my daily driver, mainly because of the thumbcluster is waaay better.
The Ergodox have me awkward stecthing my thumbs.

I am now looking for a more portable keyboard, and I am a bit torn between an Atreus or Voyager.

Anyone with experience regarding the thumbcluster/thumbkeys placement on the Atreus in contrast to the Model100?
And what about the Voyager vs the Model100?

If it matters, I have small hands.

Thank you

I am not familiar with the voyager. Can you link to product (I’m too lazy to look for it online).

It is made by ZSA

Use the Atreus as my mobile clacker, and I think being one piece makes it much more portable. I did try carrying a Minidox around (similar to Atreus but two piece) and found a small biscuit tin that accommodated it and its cables, but connecting the two halves doubles the setup time.

I do think that adopting low profile switches for the Atreus (really - in this age where desktops come with chiclet keys - they should be considered medium profile) would improve its portability. And Bluetooth, following the lead of the Preonic.

Thank you for the answer.

I get that a single piece keyboard is more portable, but that is not a major concern for me

I use model01 and model100 as my main driver. purchased atreus just out of curiosity and haven’t used it thet much. but when I was travelling for about a month I was using it for that quite long period. and I remember that I was very happy with it. for me the thumblcluster is absolutely crucial. I type the letter E with my left thumb and I use thumb layers for everything - numbers, letters, copy/paste shortcuts… you name it. it did take a little while to setup, but once done, I was very happy with the setup. the keyboard is tiny. if only was it wereless i’d be using it daily with my tablet and mobile…

even the ergonomics is quite good. I was very sceptical. startet using MS natural in 2000 and fully split ones since around 2005. but the wedge angle on atreus is very very good.

ps: I also have a wireless dygma defy. it’s wireless, it’s great, but it’s not small at all.
ps2: I’m thinking to try to corvert it to wireless using this tool: SterlingKey™ - Sterling Hawk

Thank you for the answer and your insights.

It tilts me more towards the Atreus.

I have both :grimacing: and also owned a Model 100. Before I got the Voyager, the Atreus was my daily driver at home and at work; couldn’t get used to the Model 100. I work hybrid. I really, really like that keyboard, the Atreus.

Then the Voyager was released. When I bought the Voyager and used it for a few months, I sold it and went back to the Atreus. Then I bought it again, used it for a few months, sold it and back to Atreus.

I was so used to the Atreus, it’s form factor, how easy it is to slide in its complementary travel case and using only one cable, that I just couldn’t really get into any other keyboard.

Then I bought the Voyager a third time. I promised myself to stick with it this time. And I did until last week. I switched back to the Atreus for a week. But yesterday I decided to go back again to the Voyager.

Why I like the Atreus
Form factor, just one cable, portability, not too many keys. Easy to ‘program’ with Chrysalis. Everything is in reach; I find hitting the P on the Atreus easier then on the Voyager. Keep it close to your body and you sort of ‘open up your chest’ and keeps your shoulders ‘straight’. Due to its small form factor, the mouse is close by and not too far to the right. Also, my desk at home is less cluttered, tidy. There’s just one small keyboard with a MX Master 3S next to it.

So, why the Voyager then?
Good question. Because the Voyager requires an extra cable, is more of a hassle to travel with (two parts, stupid travel pouch which doesn’t really fit the cables even though there are two pockets with zippers), magnets that I have to attach and detach every day because of hybrid work (I like the magnets as they give it a small tilt), too many keys (I still need to find use of certain keys), it looks too messy on my desk, sometimes I need to re-adjust one of the halves on my desk and the mouse is now more to the right.

But. It’s a really good keyboard. What clicked for me was putting Shift and Cmd under Home Row (never used that before). That made so much more sense. That way I could optimize the thumb keys. With the Atreus I sometimes miss pressed the thumb keys: Cmd, Shift, Backspace (left side), Space, Fun, - or ‘ (right side). With just two thumb keys on each side, and Home Row mods it just made more sense and never hit the wrong thumb key again. Yes, you can use Home Row mods on the Atreus too, but on the Voyager for me it feels a lot better.

Here’s more reasons. The small tilt is really good. It made me also appreciate the MX Vertical more; it has become my favorite mouse over the MX Master 3S. The small tilt of the keyboard halves creates less tension in my wrists and forearms. Also, I could place each half at a wider distance from each other, which was more comfortable. Less height in comparison with the Atreus. And there’s Oryx, the software to program your keyboard. It really is so much better the Chrysalis. I’m no developer or engineer. I just do office work. But Oryx is really key.

Oryx
First of all, with that software it’s much easier to keep track of your history, different set ups, what works and what doesn’t. Not just that. You have more functionalities which can be programmed into your Voyager like Tap Dance and Tap Hold (or whatever it’s called).

To give you an example: at my work I use a lot Copy/Paste and making screenshots. So, what I did is program Cmd + C to C. What that means I can use the C key as normal. But when I hold it just a fraction longer it triggers Cmd + C. Then I did the same with Cmd + V, + X, + A. Same with Pg Up and Pg Dn, hold it a bit longer and it triggers Home and End. And screenshots, I need to hold a thumb key first and then tap the key under which I programmed the screenshots shortcut. But when I hold it just a fraction longer, it copies the screenshot to my clipboard instead of creating a file. And you can tweak it to the millisecond.

Currently I even programmed mouse controls to the Voyager which works much better then when programmed to the Atreus. It doesn’t replace the mouse completely, but for the few occasions it’s actually quite nice to keep your hands on the keyboard.

This all just scratches the surface of what is possible.

Conclusion
I like both boards a lot. Period. And for long, the Atreus was my daily driver. But now, the Voyager for me has the higher ground just slightly. You can buy either one; both are good.

PS. If you prefer tactile switches and decide to go with the Voyager, do yourself a favor and get the Sunsets (switches); they’re superior compared to regular browns.

Thank you, Dennis.
That is a great sum up.

I really do like the split, where I can place the parts as I want, and I do use homerow mods occasionally. And I agree, that this works better in Oryx.
But also the small form factor of the Atreus, is very intriguing.

All of these great posts makes it very hard, but they are very informativ.
Thank you all

I’m a little unclear about this. Clearly you are aware of the ability to remap it to your preference, so you could teach the Atreus to do that too.

True. What I ment is that I was used to the Atreus with its Backspace, Shift, Command and Tab under the thumb keys. The Voyager only has two thumb keys. Therefore it felt like I was missing two thumb keys on the left half. It’s when I remapped Command and Shift to home rom, everything felt it place for me using the Voyager.

@jungnissen If you can spare the money, just get both. They’re both great. I believe I keep continuously switching between the Voyager and Atreus, even though the Voyager does feel better. But… if you really need to pick one, consider this: if travel is an issue (or aesthetics, as in minimalism look on your desk), get the Atreus. If not, get the Voyager.

Update: whenever my head get’s ‘full’, I need a clean and empty desk w/ just my keyboard, mouse and notebook to focus, or take a smaller bag to work, that’s when I pull out the Atreus.

A good suggestion…
I actually think, I will start with the Atrues, just to try something else compared to using a split keyboard like the Model 100 and Ergodox, that I already own
