I have authored a thread in the past relating to an Atreus on the Framework laptop. However for various reasons - notably the decision to make the thing too thin for discrete keys - there seems to be little likelihood of this occurring.
Whilst Framework may not have met my keyboard expectations, I have high hopes for the MNT Reform. This has been available for a little while and, whilst the original machine is rather thicc, there is a thinner version in the works known as the Reform Next.
There have been a few mentions of the Reform on the Discord so I thought it deserve a thread on the forum. Our very own @jesse has been on the Reform Discourse - along with Technomancy who is the original creator of the Atreus - to discuss bringing this keyboard onboard.
Whilst the discussion has not yet led to an Atreus on Reform, the user base has hitherto grown very slowly. Now there is a new machine with broader appeal the critical mass needed to bring along a professionally manufactured keyboard module will only grow. The Reform is aggressively open source hardware and supports the most exotic operating systems like 9Front and Genode (there is ÂŁinux for the less adventurous).
The Next is intended to use a similar modular keyboard as the original Reform and this uses Kailh Choc low profile “mechanical” switches. It can be removed from the laptop and used as a desktop keyboard in a standalone aluminium enclosure. Furthermore, as a microcontroller controlled input (RP2040), the Reform Next keyboard might be a target for Kaleidoscope firmware.
